Lightbulb Bravo XR

Hi!

If everything goes well we will buy a Phantom 34 Classic with twin 496HO's over Christmas. We plan to add a Pro Charger / Whipplesupercharger. Horsepower will then be approx. 600 (3 psi) per engine.

How much horsepower can a Bravo XR handle? Since speed will be in the upper 90's we presume the new Sportmaster version would be the best to by to avoid blow out.

And finally, which of the above superchargers is the best one ..?

Cheers and thanks,

Toffen & Heidi

XR's are rated at 550HP, a whipple would be harder on the drive than a procharger because of the torque, but if it were me I'd buy the whipple and go with a drive upgrade.

Toffen,
This link is about procharger verses Whipple. There is an issue about cast cranks being in both the 496 and the 496 HO this year. I wouldn't want to supercharge an engine with a cast crank.

Default Supercharging 496HO

Hi!

I will ask Widmer Racing - a national engine builder - what he thinks is best regarding the 496HO. Balance and upgrade internals vs supercharging. I know he upgraded a 502 to 550 HP by upgrading internals. Maybe this is the way to go?

I am new to inboards dealing with outboards for many years.

Cheers and thanks, Toffen G

Toffen,

Call Bruce Wolff's shop, he just did a internal build up on a pair of naturally aspirated 496's (cams/ported heads) for a 29' Baja Outlaw. Aftermarket cams are hard to come by for the 496 as of yet----but Wolff has some great resourses. He'd be a good guy to talk to. Shop # is: 616-422-1090 S.W. Michigan 8-5 Eastern time
