496 vs 540
I have spoken to a lot of engine builders and a lot of them are hot on a built 496 that can make 620-650HP. I can get a 540 to make that as well. It seems you can make a very strong 496 for less money than a 540 that is making the same HP. Would a 496 be a better choice or a 540? I am going to repower my 2000 38' small step Lightning and would like to hear opinions and first hand experiences of either and both engines.

It depends on if you are starting with 454's or 502's. There should not be a difference in price they are both 4.25" stroker kits just different bore diameters. If you're buying new blocks then it is no brainer and go with 540's.

There's no replacement for displacement. Never heard any boater say, "Dang, I wish my engine was smaller!" LOL!

they by far more 454 blocks than 502 blocks and the 454 is cheaper to buy at swap shops and used parts guys.i just went through this on my 10meter build.it had 454,s that were played and I had 4 other 454 blocks......it was a no brainer for me.although said.no replacement for cubic displacement.i would had rather had 502,s.but the 454,s fit my budget.

Currently I have 525SC's. 454 w/ a 177 blower. I feel I could get more for the whole thing kept together than parting in out. I would keep my (manifolds) exhaust, oil coolers, power steering pump and alternators. Sell everything else pan to carb. Put that money towards a build.

Cost effective bigger blowers if the bottom ends and engines are good. You could probably get by with a 250 setup if 625HP is main goal.
The guys that know blower engines will chime in and give you better info.
