I thought about the tall deck thing as well! Went out and looked at the gear again and it seemed to be meshing well, not to low...

Just wanted to thank Bob at Marine Kinetics, had a great conversation with him this morning and feel we will be headed in the right direction. Unfortunately it means my season is done and motors are coming out, but it will be worth it in the end. Bob took 20 minutes to explain some different scenarios in detail and it was very helpful. You might consider the composite distributor gear when you rebuilt.

He mentioned he's taking out the solid rollers and going HR, so he'll have better options gear wise.

you are working with the right guy..but as you know by now, going to have to come apart...metal is everywhere...also seems to me you are running to much oil pressure, these engines do not need that much to live...just overtexting the dist and killing H/P but doubt that was the whole issue why yours failed...

Yes oil pressure was definitely to high, my sae 50 oil was not helping matters either.... Both motors will be coming out for freshening, getting bearing clearances in check, new hydraulic rollers and valve train. Hopefully after that we will get a few season of trouble free boating. Although in this hobby that never seems to be the case....

I have one of Bob's cams and he also supplied the dist. gear. I pull my dist. at the start of the season to prime the oil system and the gear always looks good.
