Run a scan of the engine. It will show up as an overspeed code and how many times it has happened. I would not keep bumping the engine off the rev limiter.
That is correct about hitting the rev limiter as it should feel like a miss / stumble Kind of like somewhat of an ignition component breaking up, then clears up when rpms are lowered.

Normal? No. It will do that if you stay hard in the limiter, I don't think its good on the motor at any time to limit cylinders for any length of time. That is why merc has the audio alert that happens first, then if you stay in it it will crack & pop.
