I understand that I could make more power with a custom cam built for my specs. But at the same time I believe it could make pretty decent power with most likey the best out of the box cam.

I pesronally doubt it,moving the the cam degrees and calling it custom is not going to change hp all that much.you jump the cam degrees 6-10degrees,then you going against a different cam for way more hp.custom cam is going to net you anything you'll feel in a boat.
you pick a hp goal and alot of cams will get you there.

With a AFR 315 head combination there is an easy 25 HP available.

I don't think it would be money well spent to spend all that money on a nice set of heads and put the wrong cam in the motor. Not only will it make less power on the top end. But it will be sluggish. Add a Carburetor that is entirely too big and it gets even worse.

BB, I actually thought you were being sarcastic with your first post. I don't think the 741 is way out of line for this build. My only thought would be that you could make the same, or more power with a more modern lobe design that is a little easier on valve train parts. if I already had a 741 though, I'd probably run it. I'm going to guess 635 if you've got your valve train sorted.
