A smaller carb can sometimes let the engine have the same amt of cfm. However, the smaller carb with it's larger restriction, will create more pumping losses. ie: more (wasted) energy spent trying to get the air in.

Try that diet on. LOL.

===================================

If your engine consumed 900cfm with a real 900cfm carb, you are restricting it.

===================================

The 'too big of a carb' blues is when you can't get it to meter fuel correctly throught the whole rpm.

ie: doesn't meter correctly until you get the engine into a higher rpm in where the airflow coming thru is the amt the carburetor was designed for.

Same goes in too small of a carb. But opposite,

You'll get to a point of pulling thru more air than the carb was designed for. Typical result when the rpm reaches this 'airflow point' is the carb will go 'fat' with fuel.

Holley's CFM requirement chart is very consevative, to get more people to pick a carb that is in 'it's happy' range and keep them out of trouble.

========================================

More air is always pretty easy to get.

However, getting the correct fueling when getting your 'more air' is the tougher part.

Easier now.

Many carb companies can get you good fuel metering when using a carb that gives you less than 1"HG (down to say around .7"Hg) at WOT and top rpm.

That's a far cry from the 1.5"Hg Holley 'recomendation."

================================================== ========

BTW: this discussion could and will last a lifetime. LOL.
