If you do want to run both PS pumps, you would need to install a proprietary valve, I believe that's the term, in addition to a couple extra hoses. Really not much to hooking up both. I think some builders just order a bunch of complete motors instead of 1/2 being PS delete for simplified inventory control????, and just leave the dummy PS as is from Merc. Nice thing is at least you have a spare pump, hoses and cooler
Even my Baja cruiser has that extra PS setup.

Using a "double" pump is a great idea. Yes,, you do need more hoses, pressure balancing etc. and a different valve assembly at the helm, but it's worth it. I got mine set up like that. Always have PS with any motor running. I normally "go out" (IE no wake zones, or in channels to get out to the deep waters) on port, and come "in" on starboard. Lowering my hours.
No sense using twins just to put-put. lol

My boat was rigged with 2 pumps, with a simple "y" at the filter on the pressure side, and another on the return. 2 pumps, 2 coolers, 1 shared reservoir, no balance valves or anything works just fine
