Morel 4603 lifter noise

I know my 4603's were a lot noiser with 5/8 a turn, than 1 full turn.
I know the 5045's supposedly want thinner oil, 5w40, but I dont believe thats a noise thing. I think it has to do with whether or not the lifter can purge the chamber properly. Icdedppl has been running 15w50 and 20w50 with his 5045's with no issues though.
However, lately, i've been hearing of way too many morel lifters that are causing headaches. Lifters collapsing and causing problems. I got the pleasure of having to remove a blower, intercooler, distributor, intake, on the dyno because of this not long ago. I know for a fact, at least half dozen oso members recently have had this happen to them as well at startup, even with the recommended 5w40 during initial startup/break in with the 5045's.
I think my next set of lifters are either going to be a johnson hydraulic, or simply switch to solid roller setups.

My guess would be that the noise is related to oil viscosity. At lower temps the oil has a hard time getting into the tight tolerances on these lifters. When the oil heats up, it gets thinner and is able to pump them up better. I saw several posts offering information that Morel recommends against heavy weight oils.

Resurrecting an old thread. Our 500efi build used morel 4603's. Like others ours make quite a bit of noise at cold then quiet down at temperature. We haven't been running t stats so hopefully that helps but have been tossing around the idea of reducing oil weight. Right now we are running 20-50 Mobil 1. What is everyone else using. Saw straub and company recommending 10-40 driven oil. Little concerned that's too light. Not even sure if it will fix the noise either.

For as long as Morel's have been around, people have complained about the noise they make. Same deal, at start up and take a while for them to quiet down.
Personally, I would choose oil based on your engine and it's operating conditions vs just for the lifters.
Don't run hard until oil is over 180*F...no matter what the oil.
This is all my IMHO with no scientific bases. LOL. I have only personally run one set of Morel HR's and they where as you describe. I ran at lightest 15W40 and heaviest 20W50, but not 10W40 as I couldn't mentally let myself even consider that. We can run 20-30 miles at or close to WOT. My experience is the heavier oils will carry more rpm (stability) with most hyd lifters.

I have never seen it done, but a bunch of engine builders on speedtalk have said they see more power on the dyno nearly everytime, with a heavier viscosity oil with hyd rollers, over a thinner oil. Contrary to what most would think.

Worst case was a BBC, would nose dive at 5600 w/ 10W30. About 5700-5800 w/10W40, ANd 6200/6300 with 20W50. This was a hyd flat tappet w/crower lifters.
