A LOT of OMC sterndrive Cobra FAILURES was owner self inflicted because you not fill these with gear oil like Mercruiser drives Alpha and Bravo.

King Cobra if I recall correctly cone clutch was made 5 / 6 years only starting year model was 1990 for 3 apps the 7.5L / 460 Ford and the 454 / 7.4L chevy and a 350 mag 5.7 with the cone clutch in the upper. The model designation for the start of the KC and for cone clutch was APEPWS in which is true 1990 model year for OMC. This is how you determine year model of their apps -

More info for the 1990 sterndrive apps the 7.5 ford was model designation 754APEPWS and the 7.4 chevy was 744APEPWS. Both king cobras with cone clutch in the upper.

these started with cone clutch for King cobra in the upper drive - part number currently is 3853450 they ran from model year 1990 thru 1995 just an FYI
Yes this is good info -- it also came with the 8.2L (502) in later years. If it helps, I sold a good used Cone King from a 91' with a 1.43 ratio for $2500 in 2011 -- it did take a while to sell complete. If I was smart I would have sold it in parts. Keep in mind the ratio change is in the lower unit on the cone drives, so the upper is good on all cone kings. Had I been smart I could have split them.

The lower ratios are 17:20, 17:21, and 17:23.

All of this said, I've killed plenty of drives in my life, I can't break this one. All American drive service is the biggest expert on these drives where I am from. Hell Doug Russell Marine is selling them for $4995!!!

If it has a bbc behind it , you may find yourself also in possesion of the waste spark distributorless ignition system similar to what was used on tbe olds dohc v8. Interesting system ,and the "look ma!, no distributor!
wows em at the docks. No clutch dog on the big boy . If its the big boy.

Yup -- this is correct. I installed a DUI distributor ilo that garbage. You would think my set-up was a Merc, until you look outside and see the drive Remember at the end of the day, it's just a good ole GM.

Close to a Mercruiser but your port side breaker and box along with your T stat housing, fuel filter mount, fuel line to it, shift cable plate and the remote oil filter mount and oil lines look all OMC to me. Just had to throw that out and mess with you.

Sounds like the OMC KC is a pretty stout piece. From what Mike T said, it might actually be a beefier piece than most Bravos.

It is, the torque rating "back in the day" was rated over 50ft-lbs higher according to All American (I don't have anything to back that claim up). I've broke Bravo's, never one of these...but if you break it, good luck. I've been pushing 540 Bob Madera horsepower through it for almost 4 years, not saying a bravo wouldn't have been fine too...

Went by the boat today. It is a cone clutch drive. Now to wait on the owner to drag it out of storage so I can test drive it before we exchange funds.

IMO a 1993 Bravo was pretty tough in its day to. Keep in mind it just seems that yester year in the USA - quality control and our metals were a lot better to.

Its funny how Volvo Penta would throw out about their outdrive gears are Sweden metal Shot Peened under highly quality control. Kind of make think they are throwing a shot at Mercruiser.
