Default Hardin Marine Hydraulic Steering Filter

Anyone else running one of these? Mine keeps leaking where the filter screws into the body. They use an O-ring at this joint. The body is cut on a 45 degree bevel to accept the O-ring. On other parts i have used with an O-ring I remember the body accepting the O-ring being cut on an inside radius to match the O-ring. When I have the unit assembled you can still see a good 1/16" of the O-ring that is not captured by the joint. Seems to me that this will not stand up to 2000 psi of hydraulic pressure.

Just exploring my options at this point. I may re-machine the unit to accept a copper washer. I have spoke with Hardin marine and they suggest sending the piece back to them. I only have about 2 weeks of boating left here so I am not ready to do that just yet.

Thanks in advance !!

That seems like a crappy design. O-rings need captured to properly seal.

Mine has leaked since day 1. I keep it wrapped with a shop towel to direct the drops to the bottom of the bilge. May replace this winter. Only looses a quart a season............

I am wondering if Hardin machined all of these like mine. If so it would seem to me that they all leak. I lose about a half a quart a weekend. I am going to put mine in the Bridgeport tomorrow and cut the proper groove for the O-ring to seat in.
