RPMS with a 540
#11
Thanks for the suggestions. I dunno the cam specs, but I will find out this weekend.
The fuel system is original from Cigarette with the SW pumps(which don't work and are bypassed) I don't know what the diameter of the hose is, but the plugs look good with no lean condition noted.
According to the builder, these motors(which came out of his personal boat) easily ran 5600 rpms and the only difference seems to be the exhaust(he had CMI, I have Gil).
Ken...getting back to the builder and Falcon, I can't fault them for all of the the problems I've had this summer...
1. the original 420s spun a bearing and were pulled out(leaky exhaust)
2. rebuilt 540s were put in their place with my electronics(new stuff from MSD which failed) and repaired exhaust. the result was 2 spun bearings on the port motor which no one knows the cause of.
3. port engine rebuilt using "race" lifters when Crane hydraulics could not be found...the motor would not idle.
4. New lifters installed from Crane and one lifter let go, the bottom split out of it and it wiped out the cam.
5. various carb issues---crap used carbs supplied by Falcon to help me with my budget...they wouldn't idle after rebuilding them and the builder gave me his Barry Grants to use until I could afford new carbs(btw, he's ready to put his new 632s in his boat and wants the carbs back but told me to keep them until I am done for the season)
6. Port coil keeps arcing and I've got to through those little rubber booties on the + and - leads to prevent this.
7. MSD ignition came back and still does not work.
As for the MSD issue, right now I am running one motor with out the 6AL and one motor with the 6AL...no difference in Rs
I also do plan on completely removing the SW pumps and running the fuel direct fromteh tank to the filter to the carb---without all the elaboarate crap Cigarette had in there---truthfully, I can make heads or tails out of the way its configured right now...
All in all it's been a rough summer and reliability has been very poor, but in the end, these guys will work out the issues and have not charged me a dime for all of the problems we have had since installing the 540s (that includes several R&R for the port motor)

Sean, it's your situation not mine, but you did answer my unspoken question and the is that Falcon is taking care of you. Glad to hear it. Like the rest of us who buy used boats and then repower, there are always bugs to be worked out. Once it is dialed in it will all be worth it.

Yup, it is unfortuante but like you said, it kinda goes with the territory...at least you have the same experience as me and can relate...
Sooo...how bout the 28th??? You gonna come out and meet us at Claudios? I'm trying to get a bunch of boats together.
