Exhaust systems

Something pointed out to me by a friend who spent some time on the dyno with his headers was that the engines made more power with the headers being somewhat hot over being cool. He actually reduced the water flow to the headers to get some more heat into them. We're talking big blower motors though. Way above 650-700 hp

If wet, reducing the amt of water being introduced into the exhaust is more likely a good amt of the power increase. People reported this way back with Gill's.

I`ve found it depends on how long the tail is .. My STEROID headers the collector was so far back there was a short tail and it reverted. The collector would be soaking wet... worse with mufflers closed. Had to buy a bunch new valves this year due to pitting from reversion. The current SM Gen 3 have a long tail and no issues whatsoever.
I do dump overboard from inside the boat but have a hole inside the tail at the end to keep the mufflers from burning up.

Fountain Powerboats did a comparison on exhaust systems some years ago.

Obviously, water introduction design, muffler design, can keep too much water in that area too.
As an example, I plugged all the 525EFI specs into Pipemax and here is what was reported.
Note : worst lengths hurt power / induce reversion badly.
---- Collector's Harmonics (includes Intermediate, Muffler , TailPipe) ----
Diameter = 3.466 to 3.716
Best HP/TQ Tuned Collector Lengths= 19.4 , 38.8 , 77.6 , 155.2 inches long
Worst HP/TQ Loss Collector Lengths= 29.1 , 58.2 , 116.4 , 232.8 inches long
1st Harmonic = 155.2 inches long ... longest with Mufflers and TailPipes
Note: Worst = 116.4 inches long for HP/TQ Loss
2nd Harmonic = 77.6 inches long ... longest recommended with Mufflers
Note: Worst = 58.2 inches long for HP/TQ Loss
3rd Harmonic = 38.8 inches long ... more bottom-end Torque
Note: Worst = 29.1 inches long for HP/TQ Loss
4th Harmonic = 19.4 inches long ... highly recommended , best Torque Curve
5th Harmonic = 9.7 inches long ... reduced Torque , more top-end HP sometimes
6th Harmonic = 4.9 inches long ... reduced Torque , not recommended

PF Marine was first who design and made the aluminum manifolds then worked a deal with KE that really never took off as planned, years after sat idle until Diamond currently is offering the past X amount of years.
With that said I just talked to the guy in person that helped with all the dyno testing from day one with the original PF Marine designs. They were equaled with the numbers on the dyno to best marine true header on the market at that time frame.

The 'P' in PF marine is Coolerman here on the boards...you know, the one with the insane 140+mph Black Thunder and owner of PF Intercoolers.

History of PF Marine
PF Marine was founded in 1992 by Dennis Parvey and Glen Frischmon. The first product offered by PF Marine was a full length cast aluminum header. The tooling for the headers was sold to Keith Eickert Power Products in 1998 and are now sold as the "KE Thunder N' Lightning Cast Aluminum Header" (we are not affiliated with Keith Eickert Power Products).
In 2000, we decided to produce an intercooler like none other. At the time, the market only offered aluminum intercoolers that would corrode and leak over a short period of time. We then came up with an industry first of using a copper core. The copper core proved to produce superior cooling and superior corrosion resistance.
We are now in full production of our 6th generation (Mark 6) intercooler which feautures a core with CuproNickel water passageways and copper air fins. PF Marine is now operated by father and son, Dennis and Jason Parvey.
