But I will....
The secret to building a budget motor is to find a good established and proven recipe and follow it. Figure out where you can cut corners and where you cant. Yes you may leave some power on the table this way, but that is much preferable over sitting on the dock because your sh!t is blown up again. Cheaper too.
Search, the motor you are looking to build has been built many many times here.
Those stock exhaust manifolds... keep your eyes open... I picked up a set of nice used stainless marines for 600 of fb swap shop.
CAms have been discussed a lot lately. 731s, 741s, 500 efi and 525efi cams are all popular in basic builds, with some forum reading you will begin to understand the differences. while your doing all this research keep your eyes open for deals. I just picked up a new 731 for half the standard price.
Its going to cost more than you think, but that will keep it from costing more than you can imagine.
Think of the motor as an air pump. Air has to get in, pass thru and get out.
Previously you put Gills on a motor and didnt gain anything. Thats because the previous exhaust was capable of getting the air out that went in and passed thru.
So it did no good to make it let more air out if you didnt put more in.
THe cam, heads and valvetrain let air pass thru.
THe Carb and intake will let more in.
It does no good to let more air in if it cant pass thru and get out
It does no good to let more air pass thru if you dont let more air in and out.
To go even further (like Bluto, Im on a roll) If you stuck headers on your grandmas buick, it would do nothing but rumble. If you put a big cam in it, it would just lope and run like crap. If you put a big carb on it, it would get horrible mileage and fall on its face when you hit the gas. You put a big carb, big cam and headers all on grandma's buick, she is going to soil her depends and Grandpa is going to take you out for a steak dinner and buy you a lot of beer,,,,,
