Oil leak at distributor.

FINALLY got my "new" engine in my Velocity...

Took it out for a test run and ended up with oil ALL over the bilge.. Looks to be coming from the distributor.....

Did some investigating and found that the hole in the intake isn't centered with the distributor location in the block :(

This allowed one side of the gasket to fall in the intake and not seal ! Anyone ever run in to this before ?

Thinking of using a shim washer and grinding the outside then siliconing it to the block centering the distributor hole then just use a regular gasket on the distributor...

Any OTHER ideas on how to stop it from leaking. ?

How would that affect gear wear on the distributor shaft and cam? Got the oil pump shaft to consider as well.

I've never seen anything like that before. What engine is this?

Boatally Insane 03-31-2017 07:37 AM

It's a BBC tall deck Dart block. AFR heads and a Cutler intake....

Heads were flat milled. Intake has never been milled.. Had to use the .120" thick intake gaskets.. Everything ELSE lined up just fine.. :)

How about intake manifold pushed back too far when bolted down i have some intakes with excess clearance for bolt holes allowing intake to shift front to rear. Maybe look at front of intake to block for setback.

It also looks like the angle at witch the face of the hole to the distributor is off also. maybe time for a new manifold?

Looks like it is rolled to the valley ......like Kensfourwinns said but more side to side. Can you see or feel if the gap is the same between the dist. base and the manifold when you get close to seated ?
You might need to drop the dist. in when resealing that manifold , gasket could let it move around as you tighten it.

The manifold was even front to back,
AND was even side to side on the block wall.. ( I looked at this a bit as the manifold had bottomed out before sealing to the heads with the stock .060 gaskets)

When I drop the distributor in without a gasket, the sealing surfaces ARE square with each other...

Seems Cutler had some machining issue... ;)

i would be checking port alignment as well,it looks like the manifold was installed to far backwards.hard to really see from the pictures.
