Water in SSM #5

Water in SSM #5
Guys looks like there is some water in my SSM #5, Does anyone know whats involved in changing the seals at the rear of the shaft, I am guessing thats where its getting in..the oil is only done one race and it looks pretty creamy and definite water came out the bung..Thanks Jas

Send it to Craig at Corabella Performance. He has trick for doing prop shaft seals without pulling complete lower down. May want to check upper gears for pitting depending on how long water has been in it and how hard it was run.

Looks like he is in Auckland, NZ? Doubt he is sending it to the U.S.
You can grab manuals off ebay for these, I would start there. You certainly can pull the seals without disassembling the drive, but it's not ideal. You run the risk of damaging/scratching the sealing surface of the shaft, or if it has a speedy sleeve, you could damage that also. That would be a temporary fix, better to remove shaft and inspect.
Your shaft may be worn where the sealing surface of the prop shaft seals ride. you can shrink fit speedy shaft sleeves onto the shaft. This requires removal of the shaft.
Do you have spacers in it? there are o-ring seals around the perimeter of the upper and lower, could be that too. I would take it apart and inspect, replace rear shaft seals, and take a good look at that o-ring.
I had spacers installed, and one drive was leaking thru the o-ring seals at the "split line" of the upper and lower.
OH yeah, also, you should get your hands on a pressure and vacuum tester. Plugs into your oil fill and check both pressure and vacuum (two separate tools/pumps). You may be able to determine where it is leaking from that without disassembly. I think my drive was pulling a vacuum into the case after running, and would suck water back into the drive when it cools off sitting at the dock after running it.

I can tell you getting the noise come off is no easy job.. But once its off the shaft just slips out the back . Jas
