Anybody ever tried to cut or otherwise shorten jacketed exhausts?

I was thinking about buying these and cutting them down to where I needed:

I assume that there is an inner pipe and an outer pipe and that they are fastened together at the end. If so, I should be able to cut them off and tig them back together at the new cut end.

Am I thinking about this right?

I think the real issue is the access to the areas that need welding. When they're built, the inside jacketing is welded up in stages with the outside following in step. It would be probably be better to fabricate a new end to prevent leaks. I'm not the most knowledgeable with TIG, though I can definitely see having a hard time getting a torch into the pipe, but that's me.

You should be able to cut them and then just weld maybe about 4 or 5 1/2 inch welds to connect the inner and outer pipes.
You will need to switch to 4.5" exhaust hose and exhaust tips though since you wouldn't be necking the end down.
This is the way my dry through the transom CMI's tails were made from CMI originally.
