Chased a similar problem for a whole season ended up being bad battery selector switch.

how where these ring gears put on did a shop do them??

You get a bum starter once in a while? Buy new not rebuilt worth a shot? Good luck

they were put on welded and balanced by
Performance Engineering in jenison michigan.

the telling thing is one and only change from MSD to Tilton solved the problem. and the fact that MSD told me they were having problems.

Well there was two things changed starter and ring gear. By the looks of the broken teeth the ring gear was overheated or possibly defective. Not saying there was no other problem with the starter but the teeth sheared of past engagement and the metal looks like cast on how it broke. Just looking at it from another angle.

its possible, i did use the same brand ring gears to replace the wrecked ones, however. the starters would buzz the flywheels about 50% of the time and not engage the gear. but again MSD admitted they had problems. it did surprise the crap out of me when i seen them. left my vacation to go to back to my shop thinking i was just gone to replace a starter.
