Slow starter - BBC

i recently rebuilt my engine with higher compression and now need to address the slow crank issue.

Have any of you worked on this and have a recommendation to solve it? Shorter, thicker cables? Gear reduced marine starter (is one avail?)

thank you

I'm having the same issue, looking forward to the replies.

Bad starter or battery or bad cable or connection not to be funny you need to go in there with volt meter.

Ok, so if the starter and battery are production and 100%, it should turn over a production Mercruiser as well as a 10:1 Mercruiser? I say this because both starter and battery worked well with the standard Mercruiser

Agreed.

OP look up how to do a voltage drop test. Perform it with the ignition coil disabled.

Put a meter on each cable se what voltage loss you have. Standard starter should work. You can try adding pos cable direct to battery. Double check all ground cables

Thanks for the feedback.... sounds like a standard starter will work. I am replacing both positive and negative cables with 1 AWG gauge copper wire. Will report back

Price out the difference doing it 1/0 solder the ends and make sure you have a good battery switch. Spend the extra money find good tinned cable look on eBay.

are you using a gm mini starter?those starters will spin over most anything.

sandslot 05-02-2019 04:50 AM

Yes, I am using your gym starter. I appreciate the comments above regarding the cable as well. I will pick some up and solder the ends and minimize the links overall. I’ll report back
