My experience is to budget about 5X what you told your wife what you “expected” to spend. Next, get a partner that works cheap.

I’m the cheap labor. I’m a car guy so pulling engines is no big thing, where they are close to the ground. The carb’d BBC is pretty dirt simple, just a few more hoses. Those I’m going to have to re-route, not crazy about the way they had them run and mounted. Less worried about the wrenching, more worried about how I’m going to get it out. Been searching Craigslist for a gantry but nothing yet. I’m not sure the harbor freight ones are tall enough. Side of the boat is 5-6’ on the trailer. The HF one would probably work but that’s like the most expensive thing there, hard to spend they kind of money on HF quality.

It's always nice to have your own stuff...but...could you rent a forklift from an equipment rental place for a couple hours? Might be a little bit of a pain but might be cheaper in the long run? or if you are in a barn/garage maybe a beam across a few rafters with a chainfall/hoist? FYI I found my A-frame gantry at a farm auction for like 50 bucks..it was a b!tch to move but it's stout as hell!!

Truck crane, backhoe. overhead crane or big tree. Good luck.

A tree also works. I pulled my first ones using a tree. I know people that have called their local tow company and the were charged about $100

Now I have a fork truck.

Depending on the boat the HF won't clear the sides. The engine is down in there usually farther than you think.

You guys are killing me. All things I have dreamed of owning and have shopped for.

No no trees that big on my property
dreamed of a barn/workshop for 10 years (got kids going to college instead)
gone to auctions for closed auto shops and never had the money to win.

I have have a friend who has all the toys, forklift, tractor, hoist in the garage, but that this rate I might as well buy a brewery for all the beer I owe him. Also he’s crazy busy so maneuvering the boat through the shop is a challenge.

If you have the space to store this will be a life long friend for any boat owner.
