I make sure the flanges are nice and clean. So far so good. Using a sealant makes them a mother to get cleaned.

Also, loosen up your clamps/break the hoses free at the tips so that it's easier to adjust the alignment of the surfaces. the v-clamp will align the pipe and the gasket for you.
