Asking for a friend...
1997 Merc 350 with an alpha drive, aprox. 450 hrs. Had the shift cable to the drive replaced a couple years ago and just had the drive removed and serviced including the impeller. This morning, he put on the earmuffs and started the engine and noticed the outdrive shift cable at the brass nut attachment point dripping water onto the valve cover. Can water be pushed up the shift cable and cause this and if so, what could be messed up??

Not odd at all can be common because --- in the diagram below - they did not scape off the old gasket completely and installed a new gasket on top of -- Its # 2 in the diagram below or they double up the gaskets again # 2.in the diagram -- Also a new O ring needs to be installed and the bell housing side for the O ring gasket needs to be installed using bellows adhesive..This seals that part of the O ring better and keeps in place when reinstalling the outdrive.... That is # 4 in the diagram below per what I am talking about.
Also the gasket # 2 in the diagram needs to be of quality and needs to have the sealing lines in the middle of the gasket.,
