"Continuous" ~or~ "Intermittent"
I have 2 Solenoids relays for the "up" and "down" function of my engine hatch. Both are mounted individually and away from the hydraulic trim pump that operate the hatch.
While covering the boat I accidently flipped the switch on the dash in the "down" position , next morning no "up" or "down" function of the engine hatch...I believe the "down" solenoid is has burnt (not sure why "up" solenoid is not working unless it's in series) anyway, my question is when replacing the solenoid...should they be "continuous" ~or! I'm pretty sure you want continuous. Intermittent is more for a windshield wiper and blinker relay.
Side note, I installed a remote controlled relay. Can use it anywhere on the boat. I also still have the switch working. |
continuous would be a stronger solenoid.but, both will work
|
Continuous is designed for continuous use like an ignition relay so it`s more heavy duty I guess
|
Is there anyway to check if the old solenoids I'm replacing were were continuous or intermittent?

Just for arguments sake, wouldn't a continuous solenoid work in excess of what it's purpose is for raising an engine hatch? applying the switch (to raise the hatch) is like a 10 sec. job at most. I guess it's what the word "intermittent" means .....if it's like a windshield wiper application than yes continuous......but a hatch doesn't need power for more than a little time....confused! |
If your switch for the hatch isn’t a momentary switch then the solenoid also shouldn’t be momentary or intermittent.
Are you sure it’s the solenoid that failed? Usually they’d look like they burned up from the outside. If the hatch rams kept trying to close after the hatch was closed, did it blow a fuse or maybe the rams themselves failed? I would think that switch for the hatch should be momentary so this wouldn’t happen. |
My money is on a fuse or more likely a circuit breaker before the solenoids. A test light would smoke out the problem in moments. Good luck Skippy

Is there power into and out of this breaker when switch is pressed? I'm thinking the switch is bad or pump motor.
