Use the term Dipstick tube plug in google search and you値l see many different welch plug sizes and such.

That makes a lot more sense That block was used in some industrial applications too. I would just find a small plug to put in it. You could probably tap it for a 1/8" pipe plug. Put some grease on the tap and you shouldnt get any metal down into the pan.
