Air cleaner restriction??
#1
Have a question regarding my current air cleaner setup. I will include a pic for reference but I have been told that this style air cleaner can and will restrict air flow to the back "carb" and possibly choke the rear of the blower. I quoted carb because I'm running EFI but I wanted to get opinions on the matter before I changed anything. It's a standard enderle style scoop with no filters just the mesh at the front of the scoop. I was told to switch to a 360 degree open style sir cleaner for less restriction...thoughts?

Currently it sticks out because I haven't had the hatch rebuilt/covered yet so I'm not running a hatch hahaha but the overall plan is to have a fiberglass scoop in the hatch that will cover this. Just the standard hatch like you always see with the forward facing hole in the hatch. There's not a chance of this fitting under the hatch so it will have to come through. The flip side of that is the way my windshield is, not much air gets "forced" into the motor area. If someone sits center mass on the backseat right in front of the motor they can have a ballcap on going 80 and it will stay on their head. I'll throw up a side shot where you can see how much higher the windshield is than the engine scoop.

There are small openings on the bottom of the scoop where the actual plates mount to the carbs and then to the scoop but I do see what you're saying that essentially I'm trying to pull all the air through that mesh in the front essentially correct?
That being said..any recommendations for a dual carb 360 degree air cleaner? Would like something that flows with the engine scheme so black with red mesh or something along those lines??
Thanks!

Yes the mesh is covering a significant percentage of the area, it looks like diamond shaped holes, so it would be easy to figure out the actual usable opening. can't help with recommendations, I only have once carb but would like to grow up to, needing two!

Might be off topic but marine engines use spark arrestors (metal mesh) not air filter/cleaners, correct? I would think you could grab something from Mercury and bolt it on to the top like a 575 SCi arrestor.
Air cleaners would just restrict and be fire hazard if made out of paper.

You are correct with the flame arrestor...just wrong wording on my part lol
Anyone have any suggestions for a dual carb setup that still looks cool? It will end up black so it matches but paint is cheap so I'm up for anything haha
Thanks!
