My tails curve in towards the center of the boat and I wasn't able to get them to line up with the flex in the couplings. Also when you go up they generally move the headers out as well at least mine did because the angle of the exhaust flange is not parallel to the vertical plane of the engine....hope that makes sense lol.

My opinion...not sure what lake you run on but I do know of at least 3 people personally here on lake michigan that only got 3-4 years out of aluminum heads in lake michigan water only. It's not only slat water that is corrosive. If you're building this to not have to be worked on and inspected constantly I would go with a good set of iron heads....dart iron eagles or something...I went iron on mine and had them ported and they flow as good or better than AFR aluminums and I don't have to worry about corrosion. I have engine quest heads which I can't seem to find anymore but there are threads about them on here by "mild thunder" if you search enginequest heads. That's just my opinion and you can easily get to your horsepower goal with iron heads...can probably get a good set of stock merc 500 or 525 efi iron heads and get to your power goal easily and never had to worry about them.
Do you know if your friends had their aluminum heads "Hard Anodized"? I found out that this process is really necessary in salt water use but shouldn't it provide more than adequate protection in fresh water (Lake Michigan) use? If not, I still have time to add a fresh water flush to my setup if that is all it takes to be safe. Second question, how long do you run the engine on the flush system? I'm assuming that as soon as the cold water from the hose hits the thermostat it will close so the only thing that gets "flushed" is the exhaust? I ask because in the past while winterizing this must have happened because I cracked the block. I bought the AFR 265 heads with the raised exhaust ports and they are off a little but easily compensated for with the rubber exhaust needed to connect to the tips.

Tstat housings are designed to circulate a big % of water that came out of engine back to the recirc pump back into engine. Excess goes to exhaust. When tstat opens most water that exits engine goes to exhaust vs being recirculated.

The tstat does not sit against/in tstat recess of intake manifold which would block off water leaving engine while cold.

The 4 port t stat housing foes best job of this.

I stand corrected then, like I said though the brodix dragon slayers you provided are decent.looking heads. Its good to hear at their price point they are American made. The Canfields im also installing are very similar, I wonder if brodix cast them for canfield., Smitty
now that AFR has raised price of finished heads to almost 5000$ i can see a shift to brodix , canfield and even the chinese promax castings.

I built and dynoed a 565 non marine engine that made over 900 hp with the cncd profilers, they looked real good. My.machinist purports some cracked along the side with the short bolts but I've yet to see that fwiw

He is doing a valve job on my stock iron heads, he showed them to me and they have little to no corrosion on them after he cleaned them up. Im done caring about the added performance I just want my boat back. I told him to load them with the best parts we can and put them on my engine. If it makes 530-550Hp im more than happy.
