Is it a metallic odor ? An electrical smell ? A burning smell ? Smell like burning paint or rubber or oil ?
It doesn't sound to me as though you overheated though as there was probably just enough coolant circulating to run ok and I'm presuming that no overheat alarms went off.

edit to add ...
I have a friend who had a strange engine noise from one of his 350 Mag mpi's that I located using my nose . An exhaust gasket had blown on one port and the slight odor of rotten eggs in the engine room gave it away .

Not sure if you read the post but I said I thought it was rubber however hard to pinpoint. I ran the boat yesterday with someone else driving and me inspecting the engine. I noticed that there is a minor valve cover leak running down and burning on the bottom of the starboard exhaust manifold. So I think I have it figured out!

Also, i’d check inlet side to oil cooler for impeller ir etc debris. Many peeps don’t remove the pieces when they have an impeller blow apart.

when I was a service writer at a GMC dealer people would call and say "my car is broken and need it fixed". I had to question them to find out what it was coming in for so I could schedule it with the right tech. started out with "does it start?" to "does it stop?". and so on. if I made it to the bottom of the question list I got to "is it currently on fire?" on one call I got to that question to which he very calmly said "NO, they got the fire out, do you need to talk to the firemen, they are still here". was not sure how to respond to that answer so I just said have the roll back bring on over.

Great way to handle the situation.

My apologies , for some reason that seemed to skip my eyeballs . I do normally try to read posts carefully though .
