Brad, I ran the 1" set up behind a blue HP500 for 15 years with not so much as a dinged prop ever. High x on my cat and prop shaft soon to be 2" higher. That being said, I believe the rubber strips are designed to be the weak point in case of an underwater strike.

And they offer solid hubs for the 1 inch also that aren't. The cutoff they used to claim was anything over 400HP use the solid. In regards to the 1 1/4" stuff and the solid 1", I was always under the impression those rubber strips are just snubber strips to create an inference fit with the prop due to tolerances and whatnot. Are you guys claiming that they are the sacrificial "fuse" sure? I don't see the way that hub is shaped as being able to spin in the prop. More so, let's say 600 HP through a Bravo XR or anything with a 1 1/4" prop shaft swinging Maximus props and a guy pins it getting on plane. And that rubber strip is "holding back", preventing the hub from spinning in the bore of the prop? NO WAY. |

And that’s kinda funny, because I’m supposedly pushing ~600HP, and have been running the black plastic one, with the brass/bronze splined interface insert, pulling me out on a slalom, for three years now. Had the prop off several times, and the sacrificial out several times. I’ve seen no deformation yet. Thanks. Brad. |

I have a 300R outboard with a 1.25" shaft. I have used the HD solid hub with the Delrin strips. They make if fit a bit tighter and eventually wear out. When they did, I had bad "prop rattle" under about 1600 rpm. I purchased new strips, replaced them and the prop rattle was gone. The prop also required a bit more force by hand to full seat on the hub when I put in the new strips.
Mercury also has a new "double nut" system since they had issues with the 3 washer system backing off and becoming loose in some applications. I think the Bellville washer loses some of its cupping. I was marking mine with a sharpie and it was starting to back off. I replaced all 3 washers and that solved the issue for a while, until it returned. Then I replaced the hub with a Solas RBX-123 all rubber hub. It sounded smoother than the solid Mercury hub with the strips. You have to be careful and use the mercury suggested torque values with the double nut system, as incorrect torque has reportedly cause some prop shaft damage, or at least that is what was claimed. |
