If your external hydraulic cylinder is able to be moved back and forth by hand...there is likely a pocket of air on the cylinder. You would feel resistance of the fluid flowing in/out of the cyl fittings if the air pockets were in the line somewhere. Not to mention...not a lot of volume in the lines.

I would turn the drive to a point where when you push it by hand...and lock it against the fluid and now compressed air...the cyl is almost at the end. Crack fitting....fluid and air will bleed out until cyl bottoms out. Tighten connection fitting...move drive back and forth and repeat if required. Do the same for the other end of the cylinder to make sure there's no air there as well. Kind of like bleeding brake calipers.
It's just a simple hydraulic system. This should be done with the engine off.
