Belt alignment problem
Been slowly getting the engine back together and have this problem I cannot figure out how to correct.
New OEM engine block with new Promaxx aluminum heads. OEM brackets and power steering pump. Sea water/fuel pump alignment looks great. Power steering and alt appear to be almost 1/4" too far forward. If they were too far back, I could use washers and move the bracket forward. Not sure what to do to move it back? I'm kind of thinking the Promaxx head is a bit too long. In the pic you can see the head sticks out more than the intake manifold (even side cylinder head sits about flush with the intake manifold) and even a little bit past the engine block. I know I can shave a little off the "bosses" (raised up area around the mounting bolts acting as stand offs) of the bracket to bring them closer, but not a 1/4" Please let me know if I'm missing something here. Thank you https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...97bc440766.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bc181ef5f7.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bebc849bff.jpg Sea Pump side. See how it finishes about even with the intake manifold? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1870417e4b.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e223dad605.jpg These are what I'm talking about shaving down a little. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c0c4410db5.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...56c6418b54.jpg power steering side sticking out past the intake manifold and the block. |
Great write up and photos.
Have you contacted Promaxx? Are they longer at both ends? |
Can you press P/S pulley further on shaft?
|
Do the water pumps pulleys line up with the crank ok ? Hard to tell from your picture.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll get some more pics for you soon. |
PS pulleys are pressed on. They have some fore/aft adjustability.
Alt is under the PS pump? Is the stbd side having issues? How does the water pump pulley line up with the crank pulley? |
just press the power steering pulley on some more.

+1 on trying to press on the PS pulley further, HOWEVER, make sure you look behind the pulley first and check to see if it has room to go.. If not and you try to force it, you can damage the seal.. I dealt with this on my 496... There was some shenanigans going on with the power steering... It had some weird mixup of shaft diameter and pulley design that didn't seem to align with any of what mercruiser said it should be so I had to get creative to make it work..

Does Hardin/CP Performance make a bracket to fix this? Try calling Hardin Marine and ask them.

Honestly? Just use pulley shims. Shim out the main pulley and possibly the water pump pulley if it throws off that alignment. Save the headache
