In the 2004 test, it states that the Velocity 290 SC with the 496 engine weighs 4,650 pounds, while on their website the newer model is listed at 6,300 pounds.

Where does this difference come from?

I have a 260, and although I haven't checked lately, the previous weight posted on the 260 specs with an I/O is much lighter than mine. Mines a 2005.
