Updated 300x gearcase?
#1
Is anyone aware of a gearcase for the Merc 300x that has a fin the prevents breakage near the cavitation plate? I was told this was spotted at the races in Key West.
Also is it true that Merc has only one type of mold for the gearcase. I was told it always has a torque tab and it is cut off at the factory if you request that part number. My dealer was shipped a complete unit with a torque tab. I need a unit without the tab. The dealer said,"they called Mercury and they were told to grind off the tab because this is what they do at the factory." Is this true?

I don't know about the toqure tab, but I just bought a new gearcase for a 3OO and it was the same as the old one. Mine cracked just in front of the foward gear bearing race. You may want to talk to Philip on this board. He has had problems with cracks around the cav. plate on his
32 skater. Mercury has replaced more then one gearcase for him. He also talked about a new style housing but he has not seen one either. I bought my gearcase without a tab, your dealer most likey does not want to go to the trouble of an exchange. The part no is in the accessories guide. 3.O l sportmaster with no tab 1.62-1 rh 1688-840307t12 1.75-1 1688-840307t13 I would be curious as to what you learn about a new style case
phone no for merc racing is 920-921-5330 good luck . let me know what you find

Phillip was the one who told me about the new case. Thanks for the input. The gearcase was warranty job. I didn't want to tell the dealer I didn't want it. I will call Merc tomorrow. I will tell you if I find anything out about a new update. What did you pay for your new gearcase?
Thanks for your reply

Hydro I paid $3650 from a local guy in delaware. If you would like to contact him let me know. I bought a complete unit because of the one year warrenty. I would still like to find a cheap housing to install my parts in. Always need a spare. have a good holiday Michael

Hi!
Promax 300 and 300X is delivered with three different lowerunits:
@ Fleetmaster - standard lower unit - straight skeg - no nosecone - made for speed up to 70 mph - standard height - saltwater use
@ Torquemaster - standard lower unit - welded torquetab - no nosecone, but heavy duty internals - made for speed up to 85 mph - elevated propheights - up to 9 inches
@ Sportmaster - nosecone and torquetab - made for speed over 85 mph and elevated propheights - up to 13 inches
I have a Promax 300 with a Torquemaster lower unit. Bought it instead of a Fleetmaster which the motor came with and where the internals broke. Since then - no problems.
Cheers, Toffen G
