Engine Color -- What is Your Pick?

Just curious if there is any rhyme or reason why you paint your engine a particular color -- do you always do it to match with your graphics -- or do you pick a color that allows you to identify problems easier(ie oil leak)??

Cord 01-02-2003 05:00 PM

Custom. I just did mine in a candy with some polished highlights. The color is based off another color that is repeated elsewhere on the boat. I don't like it when people will polish components and then bolt them on. I instead prefer to just polish certain pieces that I want to call attention to.

As to using a color to cause attention to a problem...because I keep my engine spotless, any stray fluids will show up immediatly.

blue thunder 01-02-2003 05:01 PM

Mine have alway been black up until now. Decided to go with yellow because oil leaks are so hard to find on black. Man, its gonna be easy to find them now. This yellow shows every dirt speck. I've heard mercruiser used black to help radiate heat away from the engine via convection. I don't doubt that this may have some benefit, but an oily bilge I cannot stand... so yellow won out. Oh yeah, and they look cool as chit now too!

I went with yellow and black on the last motor.. This new motor will be mostly yellow. ... to match the color of the boat... :D

WETTE VETTE 01-02-2003 06:27 PM

Black! All of the accessories are stock and black. I have black in the boat so it matches. Blue thunder has a point on the oil leaks, but it won't be long before light colors like yellow look dirty from belt dust and stuff. Black is easy and a no BS color.:p

572scarab 01-02-2003 07:08 PM

My engine Buddy (crazyhorse) says its bad luck to paint a marine engine anything but black! So I've left them black...dont want to tempt the gods!!!But I like Red....

WETTE VETTE 01-02-2003 08:25 PM

I agree Black is good luck!:D

Quiet Storm 01-02-2003 08:42 PM

I like black too but I have a slight oil leak thats driving me crazy trying to find. Now if they would just make the oil bright red :eureka: I'd be okay.

Hello Guys,
If you have oil leaks on a black engine, you can get leak detector kits from the tool trucks-Snap-On, Mac, etc. They don't cost much.
You add dye to the liquid yo want to trace, ie oil, then you check with a black light. Works great!!!

ursus 01-03-2003 09:07 AM

Two Tone, I like the Black block coloured accesory valve covers etc look, either purple or blue

I didn't see any orange on your list:eek: I had to repaint mine when I got them --couldn't take the teal!!! so i went with a bright chevy orange ( same as on the side ofthe boat). Now I don't mind them a bit --bright, you can see oil leaks (damn it- that's why they're pulled now) and when your upside down working on them it just seems brighter under there:D

blue thunder 01-04-2003 05:20 PM

Uriethria Pink... now that is a girly color! Bet it shows stains and soily deposits well. EEkkk! TMI.

Black is perfect for those who have something to hide.

I went with black block (not that I had a choice), aluminum heads and intake, powdercoated red valve covers (matches boat). Looks good, clean and simple.

Jay.......sumpin' ain't right.........:D :D :D ;)

Jayl13 01-14-2003 01:13 PM

blue thunder 01-14-2003 07:10 PM

Whacha got there atop them uretherias... spreadbore carb spacers? Where did you buy them, I'm looking for some.

BT

Cord 01-14-2003 08:33 PM

Jay-was that the color I used? I know we talked about it, and I know that the top coat was actually pink...

Jayl13 01-15-2003 06:47 AM

BT no they are Polished Performer manifolds that are spread bore by casting.
Now with the holley's I need a spread bore to square bore adapter plate.
Jegs sells spread bore to square bore adapters and if you need the other way around, you just flip it upside down and magically it goes from spread bore to square bore.
It is magic in front of your eyes!
Actually they are sort of pricy though, like 30-40 bones each for a piece of aluminum but you have to pay the piper if you want to play right?
and Cord, no not the same color, mine is some BS laquer junk I got from pep boys
I have already touched up the engines since putting them in, pulling them out, working on them , tearing em down again, dyno testing ect./
I think im going to pull off the chrome stuff, and the pulley,s , cover intake manifold and paint them again before putting them back in the boat.
getting all crapped up from being knocked around, and moved everywhere.

All HAIL THE URETHERA PINK ENGINES !!!!!!!

Blown1500,

That black light thing is a cool idea. Just think. Add black light accents and hang some black light posters in the engine comp. Say a KISS poster!!! Maybe a lava lamp too!!!

:) :D :p
