The SSM 3, 3a, 4, and 5 are much stronger and heavier than a TRS. Gear housings and gimbals are all different from TRS too.

I had an ICBM for 6 years that I bought new in '89 and I still have tennis elbow from waxing that thing so it would not oxidize, that one looked pretty good for it's age.

They shift smooth as silk and there pretty tough ..Bravos clunk into gear and dont last .. Definately a step backwards , although probably a money maker for merc.

I'm looking to go up to 900 plus this winter.

My drives were both rebuilt by Speedmasters and I have no problems with them at all. I also like the fact that they are a little deeper than Bravo's . ( I know thats ass backwards.)
But I'm not entering in the offshore gran prix. I just like how stable it is at high speed. The boat never gets stupid and I have enough power to push it.
I have heard all the stories about parts availability and never found that to be true.
