Sorry MY BAD it should be 5&7 and 4&8 I was typing and chewing gum at the same time
The reason is that if you have a spark jump between this combo of wires (bad wires like I had) you could have an early spark causing detonation. The cylinder will fire premature and you will have damage that could have been easily avoided by keeping them separated.
I just went back and looked up all my info to back my statement up and the best source that I found is an article in Family and Performance boating written by Dennis Moore (go figure) and to my amazement there was a perfect picture of what Cord has been trying to describe. I have to admit with colored wire ties it looks cool and very easy to do.

Great idea Cord! Cheapest wire seperator I'v ever heard of. You could even color match the boat colors.
