make a 502 a 500hp
Ok, i have a gen V 502 that i am pulling out of my boat to replace it with my new 540. I have had this ready to drop in motor with all accessories for sale for a few months with no bites. My question is this. I also have some 500hp heads, the dart 500hp intake, and the cam and lifters, if i put all these parts on does this make it a 500hp? Would it be unfair or dishonest in any way to sell it as a 500hp? I am not willing to screw someone over just to sell my motor. What is a 500hp worth with all accessories? Is it worth the work, or should i just wait until someone needs the stock 502 and sell the heads and intake by themselves? Any help would be great.

The cam, rockers, springs, intake, carb, and oil cooler are the only parts you really need to "make" an HP500 out of any gen 5 or 6 502.
Same heads on either one, except for the springs.
Yes, it would be unfair AND dishonest to sell it AS an HP500. It would NOT however, be unfair to call it a 500horsepower HP500 clone.

I think Merc claims to assemble the HP 500 by hand and to tighter tolerances. Any truth to this or are they just charging way to much for the few upgraded components?

I'm sure that the parts that they change out are assembled by hand. I'm sure they are assembled to tighter tolerances than if they were changed out by using their feet or by assembling them with blindfolds on. The jury is still out as to whether they actually check bottom end bearing clearance and such. I've heard guys claim to know "for sure" that they DON'T and others who know they DO.
I've heard that 502Mags come from GM as assembled longblocks (with marine cam and brass freezeplugs) and Mercruiser pops on a marine intake and accessories.
I've heard that HP500's arrive from GM as assembled shortblocks with no cams. Heads also arrive from GM as assembled rect port heads. Merc then swaps valvesprings on the heads, drops them on the block, installs a Crane cam, lifters, rockers, and timing set, then completes the assembly.
I personally doubt (once again, I claim no true knowledge of it) that the shortblocks are disassembled when received from GM.

502procharger,,,yes it would be dishonest to represent the motor as a HP5oo. All someone would have to do is get the serial # and call Merc to find out the truth about the motor.
Now as far as your price,I think 5 grand is a very good price. I sold 2 HP500's for 6 grand and they were not dressed motors. Your price is excellent, unfortunately with the economy, everyone is trying to steal everything....Good luck
