Default Gimbal Bearing Replacement

Pulled the drive to check and grease the u-joints because of a very slight vibration, but since the vibration did't change when the wheel was turned, I suspected the bearing. I was right.......

Never changed one before, any tips before I proceed?

Thanks in advance

Stick your hand in there and spin it, if it's smooth and tight it should be fine. If it is rough and bumpy replace it. If you need to change it you need a gear puller to pull it and a ram to seat it back in. One tip I can offer; freeze the bearing in the freezer just before inserting. Mark on the face of the bearing with a magic marker where the grease hole is and make sure you line it up.

My best advise if you are going to do it your self; buy or rent the right tools. On mine even with the right tools it was a ***** them out and back in. I could not imagine doing it with improper tools.

Yes, I checked...It has a rough spot. Will a slide hammer pull it out?

Default Bearing Puller Tool

I made one, very easy. Get thread rod and weld a small piece of chain to the one end. On the other end of the chain weld a short bolt with head off cross ways inside the last link. Find a piece of metal that you can lay across the drive and drill a hole in the center. Run the rod through the hole, put a nut on and tighten. Bearing pops right out. To install the new bearing, I went to lowes and made a setup with pipe and couplers.

A slide hammer would not touch mine, but possibly yours would be "looser" The merc tool to remove it is a small 3 jaw gear puller . The kit uses 3 flat aluminum plates that stack on the bell housing with the threaded rod through the middle. put a nut on and start cranking. The 3 plates are about 3/8" thick and mine deflected about 1/8" inch before it let loose. It took some force to remove mine. Try the slide hammer first, maybe you will get lucky.

To put it in make sure the ram only pushes on the outer bearing carrage and not the inside where it turns.

I had a 280 Baja, bought it new in 1991, put 750 hrs on it , all fresh water, and greased the gimbals several times each season. They never displayed any signs of ware whatsoever

As far as I know they are still original bearings at well over 800 hrs!
