Volvo drives
CAPO,
I will probably take a lot of heat from all of the 'Merc only' guys in here, but, Volvo Penta makes a better drive. I use to work for Volvo Penta here in their North American HQ, so you might think I am biased. But now, after having worked on both, I actually see the difference in quality. From the quality of the internals to the quality of the aluminum used for the housings, Volvo is superior.
If you're buying a new boat, you won't go wrong with a pair of 8.1 Gi's or 8.1 GXi's and pair Duo-Prop drives. Merc and Volvo engines are comparable in performance, but, some of Volvo's engine components are much easier to get to (i.e. the fuel pumps and raw water impeller), not to mention the added 15% thrust you get from the Duo-Props as well as the added handling they offer.
CAPO, if you have any questions about Volvo's, let me know I will be happy to answer them for you. If I don't know the answer, I know the engineers that do.
Talk to you later,

I agree with IDO. For that type of boat the Volvo duo prop can't be beat. I have one on my fishing boat that weighs 8000 pounds full of fuel and running a 5.8 FSI and that Duo prop gets the boat of the water fast enough that we wake board behind it.
I would not use Volvo for a high performance boat but they are great for a cruiser.
