cam advice

I'm hoping to get some feedback on a cam selection for the motors i just ordered;

Dart big M Tall deck

Callies 4.5" crank

Crower rods 6.7"

JE pistons 4.560" Speed pro total seal file fit rings with a 1.24 compression height .010" in the hole should be 9.75:1 CR

I think I'm going to use my rect GM heads with a mild prot and bowl work for now, then replace with AFR's next year

Dart/ edelbrock victor intake

IMCO powerflow exhaust

I'll run my 850 Holley until i change heads, then replace with a 1050cfm Holley 4150

Cam will be a Hydraulic roller-- what duration should i be running to be a good all around cam, want to run no more than 5300 rpm, preferably 5100 rpm. I'm really looking for low/mid-range torque

I've been told to go around 240-246 intake, and 244- 248 exhaust at 50, with a 112 lobe seperation.

What does everyone think???

Thanx, Dave

I have one (1) Ultradyne hydraulic roller 244*/244* on 112* lobes with dyno time only for sale. I thought it was a little too large for my 540's , but would probably work fine in your 572's.

What do you think about Crane's 244/256 114 .632/.632?
#139651 It has 22* overlap.

I was trying to use the same cams with my gm rect port heads as i will use with the AFR's-- but I'm being told that i have to have way more of a spread between int and exh with the gm's.
DaveF--- maybe the 244/256 would be close to what i need for the gm's, and then change the cam when i change the heads
Might bring it a little more conservative --242/250 since the heads have a little bowl and port work.

The cam I mentioned made 699hp @5700rpm in my 540's with Dart Pro-1 fully ported aluminum heads------If you guys know of anyone who's interested in it. :)

Kaama --I will keep it in mind if anyone is looking. with the heads you were running I think that would be a great choice, but with the stock gm i don't think the exhaust will open enough.

I've decided to go ahead with the AFR heads right away, had to change the rods to 6.535" crowers as there were no oliver 6.7" available in my time frame.
This means that I will be using a 1050 dominator carb on a dart intake port matched to the 335 cc AFR aluminum heads.
Compression is at 9.72:1 now. Is AFR's recommendation of even intake and exhaust numbers sound reasonable-- they feel that with their better exhust port that it doesn't need to be any bigger than the intake lift. Does anyone have this experience??

As always any insight is much appreciated, Thanx, Dave

your right or they are ,,the AFR's are great I've run alot of them and sell some .
go ahead and get hard anodized heads and T&D shafts while your at it :D :D

delsol 06-03-2003 08:53 PM

Thanx for responding Bobby
These are going to be hard anodized, I figured why not get a little corrosion protection:D
What are the t&D shafts though?? rocker arm shafts??

So you think that cam would be alright for this application??
