Question Question - How do you set up the distributor with #1 Cylinder?

I am getting ready to fire two custom built 502's and need some advice on getting the distributor in sink with #1 cylinder. I know you bring #1 cylinder to TDC and align the position of the rotor with the #1 plug wire in sequence 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 but I can't remember what to do to avoid being 180 degrees off. Can anybody help?

Remove the spark plug. Use a compression guage or just put your finger over #1 plug hole while turning the motor over.
You'll feel a lot of air, or increase on the CR guage, as it nears TDC of the compression stroke. Align to the timing mark at TDC.
Install your distributor. It will twist as it meshes with the cam so it may tak a couple tries to get the rotor to align with #1. It also has to mesh with the oil pump shaft. That is a simple slotted shaft. Turning it with a long screw down the distributor hole will make that easier. Just be sure the distributor seats fully and easily on the manifold.
