Default ignition timing for initial start up?

for initial timing before I start up with no.1 on its compression stroke, do I set the rotor pointer @1 on the distributor with my damper reading zero, or my damper reading a few degrees before zero? I think the engine calls for 8degrees

connect all the plug wires to a spark block (a grounded metal plate with 1/8" spark gaps), put the timing light on #1, and set it at 8 before.

Can't really time one without a light, unless youplan to time by ear (do not recommend).
