Fuel Pump??

Fuel Pump??
My 97' 454 MAG MPI just shut off the other day as I was entering a channel. Long story short, the marina replaced the fuel pump. Before that I had tried to get it to fire with a shot of ether. My question is, if the ECM motor senses there is not any fuel pressure, does it not fire off the spark plugs? I just want to verify the marina's work....
