Jon, there is no better time to split you hull and turn your 302 into a cat.
Or, at this stage, you could easily cut your boat widthwise, add 8 additional feet, and end up with a 38 Formula. Better yet, add steps to the bottom! 1979 38 Formula Fastec catamaran. You don't see too many of those. :D |
Ya laugh it up fuzz ball. This is going to be you in 4 years   :p :p :D :D
|
Wow dude,
You are my hero. I thought dinking around with new engines in my F402 was bad. Of course it ended up to be rewiring 90 % of the boat, rerigging everything and deciding to reupholster the entire cockpit. You however just kicked my ass. Hats off and good luck......Al |

Ok today was depressing. Yesterday I cut out the old stringer. Then today I was grinding and grinding and grinding. It plain old SUCKED. I decided to grind off all the old tabbing. I did not need to but I wanted to so that I was not adding any weight. Like the 15 or so pounds would likely make a difference at this poin...... Anyhow that is what I decided to do. Tomarrow I hope to get the part above the stringer ground down and then tab the first stringer into place.

damn jon . . you keep this up an you can start a promising new career in the fiberglass industry. :D now if i could just learn to install a home theater systems the world would remain in equilibrium :D :D
lookin good man. that thing is gonna be bullet proof. should be able to hold a pair of 1000 sterllings and #6's  |

Well I got the stringer glassed in on Monday. It came out awsome and I am feeling good that I can do this now. I was worried that the amount of glassing that I had to do in such a short time was going to be a issue but I just kept moving and I got it all in before the resin kicked. I only mixed up about 1.5 - 2 qts at a time. This took almost 3.5 qts to tab this all in.

This is the front corner to the new bulkhead.

This picture shows a problem that I had to overcome. It worked out perfect however. The rear bulkhead was replaced two years ago. The guy that did the work installed the bulkhead but did not treat the one side :hothead: :hothead: The bulkhead bowed out and needed to be pulled back into place. To do this I used ratchet straps. This solved two problems. One was how to get the bulkhead back to were it belonged. The other was how to hold the bulkhead in place.

What a difference with just the one stringer replaced!!!! The bulkheads are stiffer then they ever have been and the new stringer seems to have stiffened the bottom nicely.

looking good Jon

Thanks Top.
Today I got the foam around the other stringer out and then cut out the stringer. It is amazing how BAD the rot was on these things. They weigh a TON and just fall apart!!! :( I hope to have the new one in by the end of the weekend but realistically it will be a little longer then that as work is SUPER bussy. Jon |
Serious urban renewal project. It'll be tough to follow-up on this one.
|
Sutphen I will be at the shop tomarrow AM tell about 1:30. So if you can make it up before then that would be cool. I plan on being there Sunday as well, still not sure of the hours.

Since the first stringer took me 8 or 9 hours to grind out I had to go to plan B. I got this planer from my friend as my crappy one was to whimpy and my good one is super expensive. It does the trick. Turned that 8-9 hours into about 3. :D You have to be real carefull and watch as you cut through each layer of glass and know were to stop. Now we are moving ahead the way I figured we should. I can not tell ya how many bags of trash I have removed and how many times I have filled up the vacume cleaner!!!

And we are finished and ready for the new stringer. On this side I decided that I would start to pull the bulkhead in over some time so I put the ratchet strap on there and pulled it in.

Nice work Audio.
I enjoy it when people are not afraid to get into there boats. Literally:) |
I can tell ya I am NOT enjoying it :D:D Actually this is not something that I would want to do again, but I sure am learning a TON.

Dude, I'm thinking that you are going to wish you had sealed off that cabin entrance! Just looking at that poor shop vac, I can only imagine what everything else including you looks like. What a great job! I'm hiring you if I ever need major boat surgery. Keep up the good work!!
|
No pictures but today I got the two outside stringers cut out. Will have no real time to work on it to get it ready for the new ones but hope that maybe I can get some more work done by the end of the week before I have to head up to Upstate NY.

Today I got smart. I have a vacume for the table saw. So I took that and used it as a vacume to suck up the dust. It worked very well.
|

The hose location could be changed around to be put in the line of the dust coming off the grinder.

All I have to say is "wow". What a project.
Let me help you fund the rest of it. Sent you pics since we last spoke but didn't hear back from you. Need to speak with you ASAP about speakers. Please call 800-635-2313 -thanks. -Andrew |
dude
you get an a+ for detication to your boat, but with all of the changes and upgrades you have made since you bought it your going to have to change the name to audiocraft because there is more of you in it than formula. |
HP I am trying to figure that out myself. When I am done and want to sell it can I call it a 2004? :D:D
Jon |
that's really turning out nice, beautiful work you're doing

Ok this weekend I was back at it. I got the outer stringers sanded out on Thursday, then I Fit them on Saturday and cut all the glass. I also glassed the forward edge of the rear most bulkhead. Today I glassed in the two stringers. It was a long 4 hours of glassing. It came out the nuts and you can really feel the difference in the strength of the hull and all the stringer assembly. |
