Default XR vs. Teague XR

What's the difference between an XR drive and a Teague Platinum XR drive?

Well I was being sarcastic..... with all due respect to Bob, I think that most of these upgraded XR drives are variations of the stock set up. They tweak and add their own caps, etc but the gear packs are Merc. They may weld the gear floors, cryo the gears or something but they are still Merc. I would suggest that you get a stock XR and contact a race shop like Collabella Performance and have them do the set up on your drive. There are alot of guys running XR's hard without problems. I have almost 300hrs on mine and have had to replace a pinion gear....

A couple years ago HOT BOAT Magazine did an article on Teague's XR upgrade. It showed several shots of how one of Teague's drive techs (an oriental fellow) going through the drive step by step with each picture and explaination of what they did, such as different size bearings, etc, etc.
It was a very interesting article, but I honestly don't know how much Teague's upgrades actually improved the strength/longevity of the drive.

Collabella...never heard of them. I have heard of Max Machine Worx and Billet Marine who do upgraded drive work but I this is the first I have heard of "Collabella".

Anyway, after about the first 50 hours of my new XR's we found my pinion gear teeth eroding away after we conducted a routine inspection. We them replaced with new gears at my own expense. Apparently, rumor had it that Merc didn't heat treat some of the pinion gears correctly.

My choice of course, but I think if I was going to have a drive shop upgrade my drives it seems that Max Machine Worx would prbably be the team that I would send them to. I have heard some good reports from some guys who have them running with BIG power.

Collabella Performance is run by Craig who worked at Lake X for years. He is well known in the competition areas by the racers and I trust that they choose shops that keep the race boats working under very tough circumstances.

I put a Teague XR on my 27 Fountain/Whipple 502 MPI. The drive has an upgraded vertical shaft, prop shaft, and billet propshaft bearing carrier (don't think the carrier upgrade does much over stock). The top cap is also a thicker billet piece. I bought the drive about a year ago for what a stock XR is priced at ($7K). No problems with drive behind 730 HP- fairly light boat however. Teague runs these drives on the Liquid Metal race boat. I think they've raised the price since I bought mine.
