Houston Props (Darin?),

Would you recomend a acclerator conversion for my 21 Marage. I have a 25' Concept with a 250 hp Merc. I run approx. 58 mph @5900rpms. I would like to see an additional 3 mph if possiable.

Darin,
Can you please let me know the price to convert a 21 Mirage Plus to a 23 Accelerator. I had mine tuned by Bronson Hill but I can't use it because I keep hitting the rev limiter all the time. Will the change from Mirage to Accelerator affect blow out in corners? Bow lift or stern lift? Sorry if this has been asked many times before.

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Hi darin

i got my props back before my first outing as promised..THANKS!!!!.
saw 1.5 mph improvement !!!!!
rpm is ever so slightly high for my 330's at 4700 on cool night, lightly loaded.

last night with 99.9% humidity and 84 deg. i was back in range of 4500-4600 for my 330hp.

i do see some porposing at cruise 40mph, 3000rpm and require some tab to settle.

i also see the props starting to spin out slightly at my max trim postion that was used previous. (preset with my merc trim limit switches)

would you add some slightly more cup to fix porpose and maybe pull a little more mph while dropping rpm???

or....I'l back up... do you have any suggestions.....after all your the expert

also, what is your current turn around for reworks (fine tuning actually)

thanks !!

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Hello Rob,I think you or we are off by 1.5 3 mph is our normal gain so,yes we can re-work them to get a little more and hopefully reduce some of the porpoising. The turnaround on re-work on yours will be one day in shop after the day of arrival(which is usually around 3:00) BUT sounds as if we are very close .

How was the mid range ACCELERATION was it the same ,stronger, weaker or what?let me know what you would like to do .Thanks again :)

Rambunctious 06-17-2004 03:18 PM

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

thanks Darin

Accelleration did feel improved. my buddies 29 PQ used to plane faster and get me on the first 1000 ft. now i beat him!!!. but he still pulls on top end. so a tweaking we will go!!!!!!

I will send props for monday arrrival. would like them back in Michigan before the end of that week.

let's pull down 100rpm with rework and I think we will be there!!!

thanks Darin

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Do these Accelerator props have paper-thin sharp edges? I'm interested in this mod, but I can't have a delicate prop. When the lakes are low, you can't help but hit bottom on occasion while beaching or driving on the trailer. There's also alot of debris in the Mississippi River. Can the Accelerator handle this stuff like a stock Mirage Plus?

The Acclerator is thinned and has nice rouned edges, razor sharp edges are per request.

Darin:Guess you got the props Sat from what I can tell. Please call me with any questions/suggestions or problems you might have. If I can get the 3mph you think I can I will be THRILLED!!! I did have one question I wanted to ask you though...Do you think the increase in speed will be from the max speed on the Ballistic or on the Mirage+/Accelerator conversion. The Ballistic was 2mph faster stock than the Mirage+. Yet down 300rpms from what I need (As was the Mirage+).

Randy it could be the Ballastic that will run the fastest in the long run, they are good props and very thin.will so find out.I will call you.

If you thin the Mirage+ to the thickness of the Ballistic so that both are equal in thickness shouldn't the accelerator design be faster? Also since the 21p Mirage (not Mirage+) was only 1mph slower than the Ballistic should that be an option? Again the problem with the Mirage was it was down 900rpm's from where I need and a dog out of the hole and with accelleration. Cornering was good. Which ever prop you think will give the best #'s let me know........

Just wanted to drop a line here to let everyone know I got my prop (Mirage+) back from Darin. Prop looks like new! I had some slight damage on it and you would never know...Darin has been great to work with and I am looking forward to testing the thing out while on my vacation the next couple of days.... I let Darin know how the two props performed and told him I was needing another 2-300rpm's and hoping for a couple of mph over my old prop (Michigan Ballistic). Both were the same pitch.....I know Darin gets alot of good pub here and I wanted to give him some more! From what I have read and seen he deserves it! Thanks again Darin :) I will post results soon!

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Hi Darin, Received my 30 pitch Bravo 1's on Friday,Thanks for the quick turnaround, We ran the boat this weekend after Darin reworked the props, I have a Formula 312 with twin 502 mags, Before sending my props out to Houston propeller we ran a couple of test.

The boat would run 70.2 on gps @4700 RPM, When i would try to start trimming out the boat (3 on the mechanical indicators) i could get to 4900 rpm's but would lose 2 mph, The props would not hold the further i would trim out, i also noticed that the mid range acceleration was not there with the original set up on the props.

Now with the props back from Houston propeller they came back lab finished and highly polished, We are now able to run at 5000 rpm's, we are now getting 73.4 on gps and i can trim out to 5 on the mechanical indicators and they will still hold with no cavitation, and the mid range acceleration will set you back in your seat, There still may be some speed left as i ran out of lake on one of my speed runs, Darin was able to get me to where i wanted to be with my props, I would highly recommend Houston propeller for any work anybody would need on there props cause the results are there to back up there reputation, Darin thanks again, Jeff

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Jeff,
Thanks for the info. This is good to know. I was worried about loosing rpm based on some other posts. I hope my results are as hood as yours. 69.4 GPS before Darin does his magic.

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Brian, Thanks for the reply, If you tell darin you are looking to raise your rpm's by 200 or 300 rpms he should be able to do it, I think you will be very pleased with the results, Jeff

Well got back yesterday and got a good chance to try out the prop....Good news and Bad news  Prop seemed to plane out better and low to midrange acceleration was better also. But the prop seemed to really lay down on the top end though my top speed was actually up (compared to the Mirage+ design) by just under 1mph. I was still down about 1.5mph from the Ballistic prop though...One note though was we left the pitch alone but with cleaning the prop up along with the lab and accelerator design I picked up a little too much Rpm's. I was pushing about 200 rpms' too much. I think this was why I felt the boat lay down on the top end.... Prop seemed to be sensitive to trim and I couldn't trim up past 3/8" of the way with out blow out. The prop did hold fairly well in the corners though. The Finish on the prop was excellent. I am in the process of putting things away from the trip and plan on getting ahold of Darin tonight or tommorow. I figure that maybe going up in pitch two inches might be the trick...Whats everyone else think? I will let everyone know what Darin reccomends....

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Bad Habit , :) Thanks for posting I think the prop could use a little more cup in the right places  This will pull the r'sssss dn 200 and let you trim higher also it should lift the boat even higher reducing drag ,resulting in more top end .send the prop in for adjustments when you can .Pitching the prop up would in my opinoin slow the boat down. Thanks again for the Business and we will call you when the prop arrives, make sure you put a copy of this in the box to help guide me upon arrival. Thanks Darin >Houston PROPELLER :)

formuladude312 07-29-2004 12:38 PM

Re: Mirage conversion to ACCLERATOR

Bad Habit, I think the rule of thumb here is 1" of pitch equals 200 rpm's +/- depending if your adding pitch or subtracting pitch, so going up 2" would be a reduction of 400 rpm's i don't know where you are at now, But probably adding some cup to the prop will get it to hold as you trim out, I know i had the some of the same issues as you( Read my post above) and darin was able to "Nail" my props right on as to what i relayed to him that was going on, I am sure he will make it right, Jeff

Darin: The thing about the pitch that concerned me was my old 21p Mirage (non +) ran the same speed as the accelerator but at way too low of rrrr's (4650). I figured that combined with the fact it felt like it laid down on the top end might mean more pitch was needed. Would the lack of cup cause this? Just wondering... But your Da-Man so If you say it will slow me down Im with you. Will ship the prop out probally Monday. I will Email the shipping info. Thanks for your time....
