Jerry, Marty:

Jerry, unfortunately about the only way to really know what a prop will do on your specific setup is through testing. I do believe the 5 blade will get you on plane easier and keep you there at lower RPMS. Give Ben Robertson a call at Fountain after the Miami show ends. He's testing Fountains virtually every day with Reggie and has a good grasp on what could solve your challenge. As to changing rotation, unless you've really hammered the thing, your prop shafts should be fine. A quick check would be to borrow someone elses prop and slide it on your shaft. If it's EZ on off the splines are fine. If not, then they've taken a set. At that point, you would then want to change the shafts, because the twist will continue until the big nasty happens

Marty, aside form the head gasket, the engines are fine. In fact I'm doing what you noted, selling the existing long blocks and using the externals on our new crate engines. I thought about the Merlin 509's but instead we're going with the GM 502/500HP long block. Cost was indeed a consideration. We are using Merlin heads in lieu of the GM performance heads to accommodate the volume produced by the Whipples.

Hey when you find the time, and if you still have any of the EFI stuff you bought from me, could you contact Bruce in St Louis. (The Bruce on the OSO board) He's in need of that kind of equipment. If you've not spoken with him before, he's a fine guy and were I in that region of the country I'd certainly have him do my engine work.

Hope you're well and someday we'll meet!

Take care,

Steve

Steve sounds great. I really appreciate the offer. Give me a call when you are ready. I have the 5 blade on order as well but if I can try it out before it costs me 1200 that would be great.

What would the actual rpm increase/drop be switching from a 1:36 to 1:50 ratio drive if you did not change props.
