Dont bother with the internal. Not much advantage. With the extremely weak gimbal and ring on the bravo, external is the only way to go.
I also agree with birddog, go full hydraulic. Especially if your current cable setup is worn.
As for what fails, cables helm, connections, etc all loosen up. Then there's the upper swivel pin/gimbal ring.

Gary I see on other posts that you have built your own set-up on several occasions...you need to make a set of prints and sell them with the part #'s to build one I'd pay for the the advice...

I assume the hydraulic you're referring to is an internal, non-power assisted system.
Birddog, hynautic does make an external ram, called K-5. They've been around a long time and as I stated above, are very strong.
Dyno, if you're going manual, buy a hynautic helm made for the K-5 or similar sized rams. I think I've even got my old one lying in the basement. Find a couple of used K-5 rams (used price is typically $100-125 each) rebuild them, buy a reservior/pressure regulator, and hoses. You can have a twin ram, manual, external hydraulic setup for about the same money.
