Default Zero Effort Rebuild

Whats the best way to put a Zero Effort Control for single engine back together? I tried last night by myself and the springs w/ ball bearings kept popping out.
Any help?

Really? I had my twin setup powder coated And changed
them to shifters & gear shift handles next to each
other. Alls I did was put a little grease on the springs &
balls to hold them as I assembled it.
