Default Best way to seat new rings.

Is there anyway to seat the rings with the boat on the trailer, or is the only way in the water?

I was told to put the boat in the water, run it around for a while, varying the rpm. My question is do I have to have torgue on the engine for the rings to be seated properly or can I run the engine on the trailer varying the rmp and get the same results.

I would be more worried about breaking the cam in than the rings. Back the boat in the water on the trailer and run the motor varying the RPM's. Set the timing (total advance) Check for leaks, make any adjustments to the carb. If everything looks good take the boat out and run the speeds (load) up and down and you should be fine. Check the plugs when you get home. Better to run it a little rich for the first few hours. Good Luck

It depends on what type of rings you have in your motor. Heat is all you need to seat the rings so heat her up gracefully on the trailer.

I assume this is your first firing. Change the oil then take her out for another 15 minutes keep it under 2500 rpms and then pull some plugs.

I run a blown 540 with Mobil 1 in a warm climate.

hope that helps.

Id like to get a question in here...Me and my bud had a discussion about the process. I would like to get a few answers/opinions on the basic subject....He say the type of oi(dino/syn) is not important to seat the rings. That it just takes longer with syn. Now he agrees that you need the dino on startup but he says only for the first 5 hours or so. I have always felt that it should be at least 50 hours or so and that with synthetic the rings would never seat properly unless you had at least 50hours with dino on them. Also I belive that once you pass the 50 hour mark and switch to synthetic you can't go back to try and seat the rings "more". Once you reach that point it's done. He feels like you can always go back to dino and seat rings that didn't seat during his "5 hour" motto. He says he has never had to do this and maybe so but still I think the old fart has lost some of his sense on this one ........

I'm no expert but I was told not to use synthetic oil. because it will not let the rings seat. I was also told if you glaze the cylnder by not breaking the rings in correctly you just shortened the life of your engine. Thats why I want to do it right. I don't think you get a second chance. I'm curious to get more info also.

For years now all the Corvettes leave the factory with Mobil 1 in it. But I don't know if that answers your question. I always use regular oil on a new motor only because I drain it right away anyway.
