The gen 5 uses a different rear main seal. I'm not an expert but I think the oil pan surface on the rear main is different too. The gen 5 uses a one piece oil pan gasket. If you use a gen 5 oil pan, you have to use a gen 5 timing cover. The mismatch could cause the kind of oil leaks you're talking about. Where are the engine experts around here? We need your input.

Party is correct, the Gen IV is different then the Gen V and VI which are both the same seal shape front and back. It is common to cheat and drill and tap the Gen VI and use the Gen 5 cover and use the old style timing chains. If a gen 4 cover has been use, it will leak.
Also talked to the boss about max oil pressure. He said you should run no more then 75PSI hot in a wet sump application on a marine engine. Chris Stef's Performance |

Crazyhorse called and said theres only one timing cover for a big block and I checked summits website and they only list one.it is a gen 5 and has a gen 5 pan with a one piece gasket....

Gen 4 covers are different from Gen 5's. They are both stamped steel, but the bottom seal area is a different radius.

Flatlander uses three different part #'s so now I'm really confused...Chris If I had the wrong one wouldnt it have leaked during cam break in.....????wouldnt I have had to modify it to fit?

It would have leaked only if you tipped the engine forward, because the oil level is below the pan seal and front seal, but I bet its the accessories hole in front of the fuel pump cavity. :) |

aero it doesn't have a fuel pump cavity its a gen 5 fuel pump is on the seawater pump..... I hope your right!

I've been watching this thread and feel aero-offshore may be onto something. Out on the water the oil can slosh to the front of the pan and past the front seal if you're running the wrong cover. It's been a while, but isn't there a small gap between the bottom of the timing chain and the very forward part of the oil pan? If I'm right, oil could slosh forward through this area. Just trying to help.--Lou
