Did I have a bad oil filter or worse?

Save yourself the headache and use a large pipe cutter or if you plan to cut the filter open every time, then buy a filter cutter from your local race car shop, they are not that pricey and they make the job very easy.

The 1060R has a 61 micron rating and the 1060 gold has 26 or 28 micron rating the 1060 gold has 8 holes for oil to go through and the 1060R has only 6 holes at the top. The NAPA 1060 gold is a better filter
An A/C Duraguard made by GM is a 25 micron filter and it goes for about 5-6 bucks. It flows extremely well and traps like the best. It has fewer but larger holes which make a big difference. I think you had a flow problem and the bypass valve was sticking. I would switch to the A/C personally. All the Corvette guys I know of stick to this filter.

Thread a pipe thread hydraulic fitting in the filter then chuck it in the lathe by the fitting and part it off with a threading bit.Nice clean cut if you have machine shop acces.
